INSTRUCTIONAL AND LEARNING DESIGN
Instructional and learning design are distinct areas within the design field. Instructional design focuses on the teacher and instruction, while the primary focus of learning design is on the learner and learning. Both fields focus on learning theories and domains, teaching and learning methods and strategies, instructional design models, and instructional design principles. Instructional and learning design are huge fields and include a large number of concentrations. My subject areas are instructional and learning design and instructional technology and my specialty is adult learners (see graphic below). As an instructional and learning design researcher, I examine the impact of teaching and learning strategies and technologies on audiences’ outcomes – either affective or achievement-based. My research focus is primarily on adults, and understanding the preferences of adult learners could impact foundational knowledge of educational practices to improve teaching and learning in multiple settings with varying audiences. One teaching and learning strategy I regularly examine is project-based learning and its impact on student outcomes. Other research manuscripts have discussed the impact of a STEM-integrated, technology-driven, project-based agricultural literacy curriculum on elementary students. Other projects investigated the design and impact of DEI materials and learning environments.
